How Fitted Wardrobes Are Measured and Installed
Follow the real path from design dimensions and laser survey to production drawings, protected installation, alignment, and handover.

A fitted wardrobe is not simply a standard cabinet made wider. Its final dimensions respond to the room at several points, and its closures must absorb the small variations found in real walls and ceilings. The safest process separates early design measurements from verified production measurements.
Before the final survey
Approximate width, height, photographs, and a simple room plan are enough to begin the design conversation. They help establish the likely layout, door type, internal zones, finish direction, and budget range. They are not normally enough to release manufacturing.
Before the final visit, major wet work should be finished and the surfaces that affect the wardrobe should be in their final position. Confirm flooring build-up, skirting, ceiling details, curtain pockets, air-conditioning grilles, access panels, sockets, switches, and door swings. Tell the surveyor about any known pipe or cable routes; hidden services should never be guessed.
At the visit, a laser measurement records the opening at multiple heights and widths. The surveyor also checks diagonals, corners, floor and ceiling level, wall straightness, usable access, and the route for delivery. A wall can vary by several millimetres without looking visibly crooked, which is why one tape dimension is not a complete production record.
From site notes to production drawings
The designer reconciles the approved concept with the measured site. A tall unit may need a scribe filler against an uneven wall, a shadow gap under a bulkhead, or clearance for a curtain. Doors and drawers are checked against beds, side tables, switches, and nearby doors. Internal hanging heights and shelf spacing are then confirmed around actual use.
The production drawing should show the overall run, each module, fillers, plinth and top closure, front divisions, finish transitions, hardware, handles or profiles, and any integrated lighting. The client approves this coordinated version, not an older concept drawing. A recorded approval protects both sides from memory-based changes after cutting begins.
What happens on installation day
The team first confirms access, delivered components, and the installation area. Floors and adjacent finishes are protected. Units are set out, levelled, joined, and secured with fixings suitable for the known condition; installers should not drill blindly where a concealed service is suspected.
Closures are scribed to the actual wall, then doors and drawers are fitted and adjusted for consistent gaps and controlled movement. Approved LED channels, sensors, and accessible drivers are connected through the agreed electrical provision. Cutting dust and packaging are removed as work progresses rather than left to spread through the home.
Handover is an active inspection. Open each door and drawer, test lighting, inspect visible edges and joints, and record any snag with a clear action. Receive the care instructions, materials and hardware record, and written warranty. Minor settling adjustments can occur in large doors; a documented service route matters more than pretending adjustment will never be needed.
Practical checklist
- Finish flooring, skirting, and relevant ceiling work before the production survey where possible.
- Identify sockets, switches, access panels, curtains, air-conditioning, and known hidden services.
- Ask for multi-point laser measurement rather than a single width and height.
- Approve the reconciled production drawing with fillers, clearances, hardware, and lighting shown.
- Clear the delivery route and agree how floors and nearby furniture will be protected.
- Test every moving part and light during handover, then record snags in writing.
